The PS Cumberoona (an aboriginal word meaning “Crooked River”), is a 25.2 metre long, 6.5 metre wide, steam operated paddle steamer, based in Yarrawonga, Victoria.

Designed by Naval Architect, Warwick Hood and built by Chapple Brothers Engineering, she is a replica of the original paddle steamer Cumberoona which sailed the Murray river between 1866 and 1889. Launched in 1986, the PS Cumberoona passed through the hands of various operators up to her last sail in 2006. Thereafter, the Albury City Council commenced hull repairs to the vessel, but despite these works she fell into a state of disrepair.

In 2015 she was acquired by Robbie and Fraser Knowles, and was with the help of expert steam operators relocated to her new home in Yarrawonga. Having been beautifully restored by the Knowles family at a cost of more than $250,000, the PS Cumberoona is following in the wake of her predecessors and once again proudly operating as a passenger cruise vessel on Lake Mulwala and the Murray river.

Credited with being a major attraction to the town, the addition of the PS Cumberoona is today seen as a major asset to the Yarrawonga Mulwala tourism industry, allowing tourists to experience a piece of Australian history and establishing the town as a major Murray River port.

As experienced surveyors of heritage vessels, Maritime Survey Australia recently had the privilege of completing the Electrical Survey on the PS Cumberoona. Needless to say, this beautifully maintained vessel passed with flying colours and is a credit to her owners.
