Luxury Charter Vessels - Birrarung

Home / Recent Projects / Luxury Charter Vessel - Birrarung

MSA surveyor Mick Uberti completed a periodic vessel survey and light ship assessment on the Birrarung, a custom-built Fantail River Launch operating as a luxury charter boat on Melbourne’s Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers.

Maritime Survey Australia is proud to have carried out the survey on this beautiful vessel. Additional services provided by MSA’s Naval Architect / Surveyor included completing the Light Ship Assessment and Stability book update.

Built using a combination of amoora timber, teak and mahogany, the 15m Birrarung boasts an expansive 4.46m beam and can comfortably accommodate up to 35 passengers. In addition, the Birrarung has been specially designed to sail under low bridges and cruise narrow waterways, making her ideal for her role as a luxury river charter vessel.

Periodic Vessel Survey – Luxury Charter Vessel Birrarung

The Birrarung’s owner and operator, Melbourne Boat Hire offers self-drive and skippered cruises with a focus on environmental sustainability, offering guests an enjoyable and relaxing cruising experience which has little impact on the marine environment.

Uniquely, the Birrarung was the first Melbourne based vessel of her type to feature a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. In the engine room she a 18kW Yanmar diesel engine that runs in combination with an 11kW GE electric drive resulting in highly economical and efficient vessel operation.

She has an impressive fuel consumption of only 3lt/h of diesel which is quite an achievement for a vessel with a displacement weight of 13 tonnes.

Williamstown based shipwright Ferdi Darley oversaw 14,000 hours of careful construction before she was launched in 2010 and now is a proud member of the Melbourne Boat Hire fleet.

Our Marine Surveyors are accredited with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), members of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and members of the certifying authority of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS). We believe we have the most competitive rates offering the best value to Victorian commercial vessel operators. The benefits of using Maritime Survey Australia ensure that the vessel operator has to engage with only one company. Unlike many of our competitors, our Surveyors are experienced Marine Engineers, Masters and Naval Architects accredited for ALL categories including periodic electrical and communication meaning you do not need to engage with a third party to complete the survey.

The survey is carried out accurately interpreting standards and guidelines, and applying rules and/or regulatory requirements.

The owner will be informed of any deficiencies discovered during the survey of a vessel that requires repair, replacement or action and will be recorded on a survey activity report, a copy of which will be given the owner or owner's representative at the time of the survey. We will remain impartial in all of our business dealings, and we will never conduct business in a manner which could place our business integrity or impartiality at risk or question.
