Maritime Survey Australia (MSA) were approached by James Cook University (JCU) to complete an audit of the boating activities conducted by the university.

JCU Marine Science is a leader in Marine and Freshwater Biology. JCU students experience a multidisciplinary approach to learning with a strong focus on using new technologies. JCU provides students with access to a unique tropical learning environment with research stations, state-of-the-art laboratories and the Great Barrier Reef on their front door!

MSA completed the following activities over a 1 month period:

  • Vessel surveys of all watercraft to ensure they are fit for purpose.
  • Ensuring all personnel hold the correct certification.
  • Review of the Safety Management System, procedures and documentation associated with boating and diving activities.
  • Review of the training that is required by the staff and students to undertake boating activities in alignment with legislative requirements.

MSA Surveyors completed these audits in Cairns, Townsville and Orpheus Islands.

Navigating your way through the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law act 2012 is certainly a difficult task, so JCU turned to MSA to assist with compliance.
