What type of Marine Survey do I need?

Vessel surveys can be performed for a number of reasons – when vessels are first built or then periodically for safety and compliance. Vessels may also be surveyed before they are sold or purchased or when the vessel operations significantly change. Marine Surveyors perform many types of vessel surveys but these are the most common types:

  • Initial surveys
  • Periodic surveys
  • Transitional surveys
  • Pre-purchase surveys
  • Insurance and valuation surveys
  • Electrical design and approval surveys

Already have a current certificate?

If the vessel has a current certificate of survey then you will require a periodic vessel survey.

Is yours a new or significantly changed vessel?

If you are building a vessel or making a major change to a vessel, you will need an Initial Survey

Initial Survey

Have you modified, altered or changed operations?

If your vessel is a Domestic Commercial Vessel (DCV) a transitional survey is the survey process that applies to an existing vessel. This applies to existing vessel that has been modified, altered or changed operations. The changes that trigger a transitional change are outlined in Marine Order 503. We begin by gathering the information required and then sending a detailed quote, this is then followed by a survey requirement letter. The letter outlines all of the requirements that are to be completed, this will help you understand the process and give you guidance.

Thinking of buying a vessel?

If you are looking to buy a boat a Full Pre-Purchase Condition Survey is the most appropriate type of survey. You may also require an external hull Inspections or partial condition survey, the former is also known as an osmosis check when applied to a GRP vessel. Although these surveys may be less expensive it is very important that the scope and limitations of this type of survey are clearly established and understood before proceeding.  MSA conduct Pre Purchase surveys on all vessel types in Australia and abroad.

Need a valuation of the vessel's value?

Insurance and valuation surveys provide invaluable insight into the condition of the vessel but also recommendations for improvements and a market valuation of the present value of the vessel.

Need to know your vessel's electrics are safe?

Understanding the condition of your vessel electrically can safeguard your vessel by ensuring safe and reliable electrical systems. Maritime Survey Australia (MSA) approvals are based on various standards and internationally recognised rules. Our services consist of the design and approval of electrical systems by our AMSA-accredited Electrical Surveyors.
