Ensure you have your survey record book available – if not request a new one from Maritime Survey Australia. Have your most recent or current Certificate of Survey and Certificate of Operation for the surveyor to ensure that the survey is completed to the correct standard. If your certificates are about to expire let us know so that we can complete the renewal application for you.
A few tips to assist you to get ready for your survey:
- Replace any out-of-date equipment such as first aid supplies and flares prior to the survey where possible.
- Ensure certificates for any systems or equipment which need to be inspected by a specialist inspected are available. This may include:
- Life rafts
- Fixed fire systems
- Portable fire-fighting equipment/BA systems
- LPG systems
- Compass
- Stability Book
- Radio and communication systems
- Cranes and lifting gear
- Electrical insulation tests
If there are any deficiencies identified on the vessel be sure to let the surveyor know as soon as they have been cleared.
What is required for the 5 yearly DCV renewal survey?
- Periodic Survey
- Light ship assessment
- Out of water hull survey
- Shaft Survey – if applicable
How do I prepare for the Lightship assessment?
- The surveyor will have to measure the draft marks for the vessel, so access around the vessel by tender or a workboat will be required. Some tips for the Light ship assessment:
- Ensure the vessel is secured and there is someone available to show the Surveyor around.
- Make sure there is clear access to all key areas.
- Open and ventilate any voids that are due for survey.
- Ensure the Tanks have been or are available for sounding
- Ensure that ALL voids and bilges are clean.
- Ensure there is a copy of the stability book available for the surveyor.
- A weight will have to be determined for all items that are not “fixed” to the vessel, if you could have available any spec sheets this would be helpful.
