High-Speed Patrol Vessel, VP01 - Initial Commercial Survey

Maritime Survey Australia recently assisted the Victoria Police in ensuring the latest addition to their fleet, the 16.7-metre High-Speed Patrol Vessel, VP01 met all regulations and standards to operate as a commercial vessel in Australian waters.

Designed by New Zealand designer Teknicraft Design Limited and built by Q-West Boat Builders (also in New Zealand), the VPO1 is a wave piercing foil cat with a small wave break bow shape under the wing deck. Additionally, the VP01 is constructed using high strength 5383 HI 16 marine grade alloy plate ranging in thickness from 6mm, 8mm and 10mm in the hulls and wing-decks, with the cabin in 4mm. The entire vessel is built with Sealium® marine grade aluminium, a product specially developed for both the marine and aerospace industries.

Maritime Survey Australia was tasked with ensuring the VP01 met all requirements as required under the Australian National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) for vessel design, construction, equipment, operation and crew competencies as required for domestic commercial vessels.

The new $3.5 million catamaran, recently commissioned in Williamstown waters, is the latest upgrade as part of the State Government’s $7.2 million dollar vessel replacement program. Equipped with cutting edge technology, including sonar, forward-looking infra-red cameras, and the latest electronic navigation systems, the vessel will be used for both general patrols and rescues.

The Victoria Water Police coordinate all marine incidents involving recreational vessels, yachts, fishing vessels and commercial vessels throughout the State of Victoria and its coastal waters bordering the Bass Strait, with incidents ranging from overdue vessels, flare sightings, boats suffering mechanical breakdowns, missing divers, injured crewmembers and distress calls.

Maritime Survey Australia continues to support the efforts of all involved in keeping Australia’s waters safe for recreational and commercial use and we’re proud to have been able to assist the Victoria Police in this way.

Building or buying a new vessel or changing class?

Contact Maritime Survey Australia today to discuss your project requirements.

An Initial Survey is the inspection of a vessel, generally for the first time, to assess and approve its design and construction against the requirements of the NSCV or other standards that apply under Marine Order 503 (Certificates of Survey National Law) 2013.

Our initial marine surveyors will liaise with the vessel builder and designer to check compliance against the relevant survey standards to minimise delays, or prevent any last-minute headaches, to ensure a vessel is able to comply as a Domestic Commercial Vessel.
